If you’re getting water in your ice cubes and all of the plumbing seems to be working properly, it’s time to test your water inlet valve. A bad valve can cause several issues with your ice maker, such as no ice at all or an excessive amount of ice being produced. Follow these steps to test your valve and help determine if it needs replacing.
Step 1: Turn Off The Power
Before you start with any testing or changing of any parts, first turn off your refrigerator’s circuit breaker.
The power to your ice maker and water dispenser should be off. If there is no circuit breaker or fuse box close by your refrigerator, then locate where your main electrical panel is and shut off power from there.
You will want to either turn it all off or just turn off power to that one device. No exceptions here! Don’t assume that if you are unplugging something, it’s safe because you are unplugging it; everything has electricity going through it even when it’s not turned on.
Step 2: Place A Container Under The Dispenser
The ice maker dispenser is usually located on a door that opens from one side or under a drawer. Place a container or cup under it to catch any leaking water during testing.
If there is no dispenser, place some kind of container directly under your fridge’s water inlet valve. This might be tough depending on where your water inlet valve is located, but it’s important for safety reasons to avoid having any leaking water near you.
Step 3: Use A Screwdriver to Remove The Cover From The Ice Maker
First, use a screwdriver to remove any metal covers that are present on your refrigerator. You can find these covers either at the front or back of your refrigerator, and they are typically held in place by screws.
Next, examine your ice maker and locate its water inlet valve. It is usually visible behind a grill at the bottom of your freezer compartment or under an access panel near its top. Finally, take a note of where any hoses are located so you can replace them after completing all testing procedures.
Step 4: Remove the Air Vent and Adjustable Lever
Locate these three components in your water supply system. The ice maker dispenser cover sits atop your ice maker and is meant to prevent dust from getting into it. It has an opening for water to get inside of it, which leads to your ice cubes.
The air vent, located on top of your refrigerator, allows steam that gets trapped in your refrigerator compartment by its compressor to escape while not allowing any outside air to enter it.
The adjustable lever controls how hard or easy it is for you push down on the dispenser handle with enough force for a glass or bowl of ice cubes to fall out of your dispenser or onto its floor tray.
Step 5: Using A Plunger, Unscrew The Water Tube And Replace It
It may be easier to remove and replace a water inlet valve with help from a partner. Have your partner shut off water to your fridge while you hold open a clamp or screw that stops cold water from flowing into your refrigerator.
Remove the old valve, attach a new one and replace the clamp or screw. Do not turn on water supply before installing a new inlet valve. Make sure everything is turned off, then check for leaks before using your ice maker again.
Step 6: Replace The Dispenser Cover, Air Vent, and Adjustable Lever.
Before you put everything back in place, you’ll need to test your ice maker to make sure it works. Remove one of your cubes from the freezer and push it through as though it were being dispensed. The plastic flap should flip up and give you a clear path into your cube dispenser.
Put everything back together by snapping or screwing on all of your parts, then power on your refrigerator and wait for ice to start forming. If there is no water flow, check that both hoses are connected correctly and call a repair professional if necessary.
Once you know that water is flowing correctly, let your ice maker run for 24 hours to make sure everything is working properly!
Step 7: Refill Your Freezer
It’s highly unlikely that your fridge will overflow, but it’s a good idea to check after your inlet valve replacement. Make sure you replace any food or drink you may have had to move out of place while working on your system and make sure there are no puddles around your freezer or refrigerator.
If everything seems dry, fill up a glass with water and let it sit in your freezer overnight. If everything is dry again come morning, congratulations! You just replaced an ice maker water inlet valve without having to call a repairman for help! Enjoy that icy beverage with breakfast tomorrow!
Step 8: Turn On The Power and Wait For 24 Hours Before Opening The Door
Once you have completed all steps, make sure to turn on your refrigerator and leave it on for at least 24 hours. This will make sure that if you have a leak in your water supply line or ice maker, you won’t immediately be able to tell because of all of your refrigerated water dispensing.
When you come back after 24 hours, check to see if there is any standing water in front of your ice maker before opening up its control panel. If there is standing water, it means that your refrigerator has a leak somewhere and needs repair as soon as possible.
If everything looks good after 24 hours, open up your ice maker’s control panel and pour some hot water into it.
Step 9: Check If There Is Any Leakage
First of all, keep in mind that you will be dealing with water here, so make sure to keep a drain pan beneath your ice maker’s water inlet valve.
If everything seems okay on your end and there is no visible leakage anywhere, proceed to turn off both of your main water supply valves and begin to fill up your icemaker with about 2 or 3 gallons of tap water.
Once you have filled it up enough, place a white towel underneath it so that any leaks from below will be easily visible.
After doing so, plug your refrigerator back into its electrical outlet and then switch on its ice-making function again for another 30 minutes while standing close by to watch out for any signs of leakage. Any leakage that is noticed must immediately be stopped as soon as possible.

For an appliance like an ice maker, water is needed to work properly. If there’s a problem with your inlet valve, it could prevent ice from forming.
